Bachelor of Music Education

Music Education focuses on teacher preparation for a wide variety of elementary and secondary school settings. Students can explore specialized courses in instrumental, choral, general, and technology concentrations.

Talent Requirements for Application

  • Complete an audition on your primary instrument. Audition requirements vary by instrument. Students can select their audition preference on the Music Supplement (sent 24-48 hours after submitting the online application)
  • Complete an interview with the Music Education faculty. During the virtual interview our faculty will engage the applicant in a discussion of their musical background, leadership experience, and long-term professional goals. Applicants will also have the opportunity to ask the faculty questions about the BME degree program, the various courses of study at the School of Music and the university experience in general. The interview will be scheduled on the same date as the audition.

About Bachelor of Music Education

The Bachelor of Music education certifies students to teach K-12 music in Illinois public schools. The program incorporates field experiences throughout the four year program. While students can concentrate on instrumental, choral, general, or Music Technology, the curriculum allows flexibility for students to take coursework across all music education concentrations.

Graduates of the program teach in public and private schools in both U.S and international settings.
