Bachelor of Arts, Music + Option

The Music + option allows maximum flexibility for students to design a curriculum suited to their individual interests. In addition to core music coursework, students pursue supporting coursework from an area of interest outside of the School of Music.

Talent Requirements for Application

When applying to the University of Illinois, prospective first-year and transfer students should select the “Music” degree option, and specify the “Music +” option on the supplemental music form. The link to your supplemental music form will be emailed to you 24-48 hours after you submit your University application. The Music + option does not require an audition or portfolio. Students are welcome to submit additional optional materials. Suggested materials include:

  • A writing sample from a recent class or project that reflects your interests. This sample should address your goals and career aspirations as it relates to the Music+ option.
  • A YouTube video (example of your work, video essay, musicianship, etc).
  • SoundCloud page or Demo CD.
  • Any marketing/promotional materials you’ve created.
  • Any other materials that you think showcase work you’ve done in your interest area.
