Internal Transfer Application Process

Current University of Illinois students interested in adding a School of Music degree as a dual or double major, or transferring into a School of Music degree program, can find information about the application process and requirements below.

Important Dates

SPRING 2027 Term:
- Apply by November 1.
- Schedule your audition and/or submit all required materials (such as a portfolio, if applicable) by November 15.

FALL 2027 Term:
- Apply by March 1.
- Schedule your audition and/or submit all required materials (such as a portfolio, if applicable) by April 1.

All final paperwork must be completed no later than the 10th day of the term that you wish to add the degree. Late applications for internal transfers are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Step One: Verify Your Eligibility

Before applying, please verify that you meet the minimum requirements to transfer into a School of Music degree program.

Minimum GPA Requirements

3.5/4.0 GPA for Computer Science + Music
3.0/4.0 GPA for Music Education
2.0/4.0 GPA for all other music degree programs

Prerequisite Courses (Computer Science + Music Only)

To be considered for the Computer Science + Music program, students must earn a minimum grade of B+ in each of the following courses:

CS 124
CS 128
CS 173
CS 225

Prospective Computer Science + Music students may apply for admission during the semester in which they are enrolled in their final prerequisite course.

Talent Component

Applicants must complete all program-specific requirements, including the required talent component. Talent component results will be reviewed as part of the admissions process (read more information below).

Planning Considerations

Students should plan for a minimum of three years to complete degree requirements after transferring into a School of Music program. To stay on track for timely degree completion, students are encouraged to apply no later than their sophomore year. If you would like to meet with an academic advisor regarding your expected time to graduation, before applying, please email Dr. Eagen-Jones at eagen@illinois.edu.

Step Two: Prepare The Program Specific Requirements for Your Major

As an internal transfer applicant to the UIUC School of Music, it’s important to choose the degree that best aligns with your goals. The School offers several undergraduate degrees: BA, BMUS, BMA, BME, and BS in Music. Please note that our Musicology and Music Composition programs offer curricula in both the BA and BMUS degrees. Curriculum details and complete music application material requirements can be found by program:

BA: Bachelor of Arts in Music
No audition, portfolio/additional essays may be required. Click on program for more information.

BMUS: Bachelor of Music
Auditions are required for all BMUS degrees (see Audition Dates and Requirements); Music Composition applicants must submit a composition portfolio, Musicology and Open Studies applicants may have an additional essay requirement. Click on program for more information.

BMA: Bachelor of Musical Arts
Audition required for BMA degree. Click on program for more information.

BMA – Lyric Theatre

BME: Bachelor of Music Education
Audition required for BME degree (see Audition Dates and Requirements); A follow-up interview with Music Education faculty will be scheduled separately from your audition. Click on program for more information.

BS: Bachelor of Science in Music
No audition is required for the BS degree; however, a CS + Music portfolio and additional essays are required, with interviews by invitation only.
