Academic Year MME

Students in the academic year program can take advantage of the many curricular, cultural, and educational opportunities such as performance in ensembles, attendance at concerts, courses of study across campus, and participation in the richness and diversity of campus life.The completion of all degree requirements for the 32-credit program typically involves two academic years in residence but may be completed in one academic year and two summer terms or other configurations.

Applied Study

Students wishing to enroll in graduate level applied instruction as part of their degree program must audition with the appropriate applied area professor. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the professor and arrange for an audition. Students must enroll in 400- or 500-level applied study and may only count up to 4 credits toward the MME degree.

Assistantships

The faculty of the Music Education Area recommend graduate students for assistantships based on their records of academic achievement, teaching experience, and needs of the Area. All graduate student applicants are automatically considered for assistantship appointments. There is no separate assistantship application. For the Music Education Area, duties could include assisting a faculty member in teaching an undergraduate class, supervising field experiences for undergraduate students, or assisting with faculty research. Assistantships at 25% or higher carry a full tuition waiver and partial fee waiver with the stipend. These assistantships are competitive and are not offered to all admitted students. Time to Degree Completion of the MME

The Graduate College allows MME students a maximum of five years from the date of initial enrollment in graduate school at U of I to complete degree requirements.

Capstone Requirements for the MME

Two options are available for MME students in the academic year program, the MME Thesis, MUS 599 (4 credits) or the MME Capstone Projects and Capstone Project Synthesis, MUS 569 (2 credits)

Entry Requirements for the Master of Music Education (MME)

• An undergraduate degree in music education from an accredited institution.
• An overall grade point average for the last 60 credit hours of undergraduate work of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). The grade average for Music Education and Education courses, when averaged separately, must also be at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).

Admission to the Master of Music Education (MME)

1. Under the “Program-Specific Questions” of the university graduate application, submit a personal statement discussing your reasons for pursuing graduate study in music education and your potential to contribute to a community of equity and inclusion. This statement will also be used to evaluate your writing ability.
2. Complete a personal interview with the MME Program Coordinator (Dr. Donna Gallo), to be scheduled after the deadline for MME applications and after all admission materials are received.
3. Submit three letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak to your potential for success in graduate music study and your teaching ability or potential. These letters should include recommendations from principals, supervisors, and/or former professors.

Please note that the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is not required for application to any MME program, nor do any MME students complete an audition or take placement exams in music theory or aural skills.
