Melinda Rodriguez Named Winner of Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Vocal Competition

Graduate student Melinda Rodriguez was recently named the winner of the 3rd Annual Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Vocal Competition. 

Ms. Rodriguez was one of five finalists, selected from a field of 50 registrants, representing 16 states and 7 countries from around the world.

Hosted by George Washington University, the finalists performed on April 27, the 103rd birthday of Ella Fitzgerald hersef. Finalists performed with the legendary Count Basie Orchestra. 

A three-time Downbeat Award winner, Ms. Rodriguez has led the UI Jazz Vocal Ensemble and Jazz Vocal Combos. She also has taught at Millikin University and Illiniois Wesleyan University. 

She has previously studied at New England Conservatory and Florida International University, where her primary teacher was Lisanne Lyons. Ms. Rodriguez is a Master's student in Jazz Voice and is a student of Chip Stephens.
