Anthony M. Messina Joins Illinois Bands Faculty
Dr. Anthony M. Messina joins the School of Music’s Bands faculty as Clinical Assistant Professor beginning in Fall 2018
He will serve as Assistant Director of Bands, Assistant Director of the Marching Illini, and Assistant Director of the Fighting Illini Athletic Bands at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign where his responsibilities include assisting with the 375-member Marching Illini, and conducting the Hindsley Symphonic Band, Women’s Basketball Band, Volleyball Band.
Prior to his appointment, Dr. Messina served as Visiting Associate Director of Bands and Director of Athletic Bands at Florida Atlantic University where he oversaw all aspects of the athletic band program, including direction of the Marching Owls, Parliament Sound Basketball Band, and conducting the Symphony Band. Under Dr. Messina’s direction, ensembles have performed for President Trump in 2018 and at the nationally televised C-USA Championship and 2017 Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl.
A proponent of new music and historical perspective, Dr. Messina’s current research endeavors include Leonard B. Smith, the Detroit Concert Band, and their discography. He has given presentations at the College Band Directors National Association Southern Division Conference, the Massachusetts Music Educators Association Conference, and the 2018 International Association for the Research and Promotion of Wind Music (IGEB) Conference.
Dr. Messina holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Wind Conducting from the University of Kansas, a Master of Music in Wind Conducting from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, and a Bachelor of Music Education from Wayne State University.
