Smith Competition

Eligibility:

Undergraduate female music majors who

1. ​are registered in the College of Fine and Applied Arts as their primary college
2. according to the Registrar’s Office is an Illinois resident
3. who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or higher,
4. and receive the approval of their applied professor.

Date and Time:

Friday, March 28, 2025, beginning at 4 PM in Smith Recital Hall

Audition Requirements:

1. Perform at least 2 contrasting works demonstrating technical ability and lyrical musicality.
2. The total duration of the repertoire should not be less than eight minutes and not exceed fifteen minutes.  (Please feel free to exclude long accompaniment passages to maximize solo passages).
3. Memorization of repertoire is optional.
4. There is no need to submit scores as part of the competition.

Submission Guidelines:

• Accompaniment is encouraged, but not a requirement.
• Each applicant is required to acquire their own accompanist, and contact them in a timely manner.
• All decisions from competition judges are final.

Smith Scholarship Details:

• The scholarship is retroactive to the beginning of the fall semester of the current year.
• This scholarship duration is based upon the normal length of study to attain an undergraduate music degree. This is most often a maximum of eight semesters. The projected length of study will be determined according to the current class standing in the School of Music. For example, a student in the first semester of her freshman year as a music major would receive the award for no more than a total of eight academic semesters [no summer sessions]. Exceptions or irregularities in this matter will be handled on a case-by-case basis and require the approval of the Admissions Director and the Director of the School of Music.
• The terms of the scholarship require the recipient to continue as a music major registered in the College of Fine + Applied Arts and to study applied music every semester in residence on campus, with the exception of that semester during which she practices teaches as a music education major.
• A recipient is required to make normal progress toward her degree and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00 in all course work taken at the University of Illinois; the award will be revoked and made available to another qualified student should this grade point average not be maintained.
• The scholarship is subject to inclusion in any financial aid considerations the recipient may receive from the University of Illinois.
