Liann J. Kang (formerly Jung Hyun Lee), a doctoral candidate in Composition-Theory, has received the esteemed 2024 Kate Neal Kinley Memorial Fellowship. This prestigious creative fellowship designed for promising young graduates of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and other esteemed institutions. It honors alumna Kate Neal Kinley‘s profound dedication to the arts, awarding a grant of $20,000 to selected recipients. With this grant, Liann plans to study with world-renowned composers João Pedro Oliveira in Santa Barbara and Philippe Hurel in Paris.
Liann expressed her gratitude, stating, “I am very honored to receive the prestigious Kinley Fellowship that supports talented graduates in the arts. This fellowship will help me further develop my work in electroacoustic music and my compositional research through advanced studies with two respected leaders in contemporary music.”
Her compositions seek to direct the audience’s perception of sound and space, altered by crafted sonic illusions. Inspired by her own synesthesia, she aims to stimulate not only hearing but all the senses, encouraging each to awaken uniquely in response to the temporal art of music.
