Thomas R. Ward

Bio

Previously on the faculty of St. Vincent College and the University of Pittsburgh, Tom Ward’s research has focused on music and liturgy in the Middle Ages and Renaissance and on music and music theory in the universities of the 14th and 15th centuries. He is the author of the book The Polyphonic Office Hymn 1400-1520: A Descriptive Catalog, the editor of a volume of the New Obrecht Edition, a contributor to the New Grove and Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart, and has published articles and reviews in Musica Disciplina, Journal of the American Musicological Society, Early Music History, Tijdschrift van de Vereniging voor Nederlandse Muziekgeschiedenis, and Computers and the Humanities. From 1978 to 1980 Professor Ward served as review editor of the Journal of the American Musicological Society. He is associate director of the Musicological Archive for Renaissance Manuscript Studies.

Teaching Philosophy

The goal of each of my courses is twofold: to communicate the specific subject matter and to develop the knowledge and skills necessary for continuing self-education in the subject. This takes very different forms depending on the level of the students and the focus of the particular course. In each of these courses, students receive training in how to learn more about the subject and, in some cases, are provided a point of view that may be accepted or modified by their own later work.
