John Meyers

Bio

John Paul Meyers is an ethnomusicologist with a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania and a BA in Music and American Studies from Columbia University. His research focuses on popular music of the United States and Latin America, with particular attention to how contemporary popular music scenes understand their relationships to the past. He has done fieldwork on tribute bands in the United States, Mexico, and Argentina, and his current research concerns the sampling of soul and funk recordings from the 1970s in hip-hop. Recent articles on tribute bands, rock music in Mexico City and Buenos Aires, and cultural politics in African American music have been published in Ethnomusicology, Ethnomusicology Forum, and the Journal of Popular Music Studies.  He has previously taught at Michigan State University and is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of African American Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
