The Jazz Division at the University of Illinois actively runs four big bands each semester. The Concert Jazz Band is under the direction of Chip McNeil. The Repertory Jazz Orchestra, normally under legendary composer-arranger and trombone virtuoso Jim Pugh’s direction, explores a wide range of repertoire and styles, serves as a feeder ensemble for the Concert Jazz Band and is a very prominent group in the jazz program. Jazz Bands 3 and 4, directed by our outstanding Jazz Studies graduate students, function as a gateway for both newer students to the program and other non-jazz majors, and gives students plenty of opportunity to grow as ensemble players and improvisers.
Each big band has a minimum of three public performances per semester, including their final concerts at the Krannert Center of the Performing Arts.
For more information about the Big Bands, contact Jazz Performance director, Chip McNeil.
