Vocal Coaching and Accompanying

The central mission of the Vocal Coaching and Accompanying Division at the University of Illinois School of Music is to offer comprehensive, intensive instruction in collaborative piano in both vocal and instrumental repertoire, leading to the degrees of Master of Music or Doctor of Musical Arts.

Our professors, in cooperation with other world-class faculty from all of the school’s other divisions, offer instruction and experience in recital and chamber music performance, opera and song coaching, recitative accompaniment, supertitle design and operation, and other aspects of the accompanist’s craft. We place strong emphasis on the acquisition of collaborative skills and on language comprehension and diction. Students benefit from resources in the arts and humanities that only a major research institution like Illinois can provide, including one of the largest university libraries in the nation.

Graduate assistantships are available that provide experience in vocal, operatic, choral, and instrumental music.
