The University of Illinois Symphony Orchestra (UISO) is celebrating its 150th anniversary by launching the 1874 Project, an initiative to commission six female composers to create new works that will be accessible to youth, high school, and collegiate orchestras. The project aims to address the underrepresentation of female composers in orchestral programming and will feature pieces inspired by events from 1874, such as the creation of blue jeans and the sighting of Comet Coggia.
