Pete “Afro D” Shungu is a multifaceted musician, educator, and community leader in the Champaign-Urbana, Illinois area, known for his work as a hip-hop MC, jazz trumpeter, spoken word poet, and bandleader of Afro D & Global Soundwaves, a group blending jazz, funk, and socially conscious hip-hop. He’s also a Teaching Assistant Professor in Music Education at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and co-director of UIUC’s Hip Hop Innovation Center.
Musical Style: A fusion of jazz, funk, soul, and hip-hop, often with socially conscious themes.
