Ryan Haynes, a 2007 graduate of the University of Illinois School of Music M.M. program in Musicology/Ethnomusicology and an elementary music teacher in Austin Public Schools, has received a Fulbright Teacher Exchange award for the 2025–2026 cycle from the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.
This fall, Haynes will travel to Colombia to study the relationship between elementary music education and social-emotional learning. His project includes work with Fundación Batuta, a national music education organization established with support from the Colombian government to promote community-building and reconciliation following the country’s decades-long civil war.
The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and operates in more than 160 countries worldwide. In the United States, the Institute of International Education administers the Fulbright U.S. Student and U.S. Scholar Programs on behalf of the Department of State. Each year, the program supports teacher exchanges as well as research, study, and teaching opportunities abroad.
Haynes is one of approximately 400 master teachers and administrators who participate in Fulbright Teacher Exchanges annually. In addition, roughly 800 individuals teach or conduct research abroad each year through the Fulbright Program, while more than 2,000 college graduates, graduate students, and early-career professionals participate in study and research exchanges or serve as English teaching assistants in schools abroad.
