Marching Illini with REO Speedwagon at the 2025 Homecoming Game
Homecoming Weekend Recap
In late September, University of Illinois Bands was thrilled to welcome over 250 bands alumni back to campus for this year’s homecoming celebrations, which featured special guests REO Speedwagon, who performed live during the Marching Illini halftime show.
Our dedicated alumni band members gathered bright and early at 6 a.m. for a gameday rehearsal and a full day of MI activities. During halftime, the alumni band took the field along with REO Speedwagon, performing “157 Riverside Avenue,” in honor of #band157.
Associate Director of Bands Emeritus Gary Smith returned to lead the Alumni Band, and former director of the Marching Illini, Dr. Peter Griffin, conducted the National Anthem. Without a doubt, the spirit of the Alumni Band was instrumental in helping the Fighting Illini secure their win over USC.
The Marching Illini finished off an incredible weekend with the annual “In Concert” performance at State Farm Center.
It was a wonderful weekend filled with camaraderie, music, and cherished moments, a wonderful reminder of the lasting connections made through Illinois Bands. Thank you to the alumni who joined us, and a very special thank you to the Alumni Board for all of their planning, coordination, and dedication to making the entire weekend a success! We hope to see you all next year!
