Jeffrey Magee Wins Award
Professor Jeffrey Magee (LTI and Musicology) received the 55th Annual ASCAP-Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award for an outstanding article in the popular music field for “’Honor the Source’: Race, Representation and Intellectual Property in Jelly’s Last Jam,” published in the journal Studies in Musical Theatre.
The article explores the complicated connections between Ferdinand “Jelly Roll” Morton (1890-1941), his biographer Alan Lomax (1915-2002), and the musical theatre piece Jelly’s Last Jam (1992).
The ASCAP Foundation Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Awards program commemorates Deems Taylor (1885-1966) and Virgil Thomson (1896-1989), both composers and critics renowned for their impact on American music.
Congratulations Professor Magee!
