Latin American Ensemble

The University of Illinois’ Latin American Ensemble is an experimental group that specializes in the performance and dissemination of Latin American music from all over the Americas, including North, Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean. Directed by Dr. Guido Sánchez-Portuguez, the LAE explores the rich traditions of Mexican son, Central American marimba, Brazilian choro, Peruvian landó, Cuban rumba, Venezuelan joropo, Argentinian tango, etc.

Open to music majors, minors and non-music majors, the Latin American Ensemble is the perfect vehicle for any instrumentalist or vocalist endeavoring to expand their musical horizons and perform in a high-level group that includes cool and intricate arrangements, as well as original pieces written exclusively for it.
