About Dr. Garnett
Biography
Dr. Guy Garnett retired from the School of Music in 2016 as associate professor emeritus of music composition and Director of the Cultural Computing Program at the Siebel Center on the campus of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He previously held research appointments at UC Berkeley, Stanford University’s CCRMA, and the Yamaha Corporation. His work ranges over the field of music composition—for acoustic and/or computer instruments—interactive electronic performance, and interactive art in synthetic worlds. His recent work builds from the technologies of massively multiplayer online games (MMOG), gesture tracking, music and video synthesis and processing, to create new, hybrid works of interactive performance art. The Cultural Computing Program was created in 2004 to develop cultural context as well as creative content for technological achievement. Creating and transforming culture with computers is its primary goal. CCP uses and develops computer technology to enhance, extend, and transform human creative products and processes. CCP brings together researchers and creative practitioners in the arts and sciences to collaborate on innovative, highly cross-disciplinary projects in the arts and sciences. A secondary interest is in using the techniques and processes of MMOGs to facilitate and encourage experiential learning in the sciences, arts, and other areas.
He also served as director of the Illinois Informatics Institute and is currently the director of eDREAM.
