Illinois Young Composer Contest

The second annual Illinois Young Composer Contest is now closed.

Below are the criteria for the 2020 contest. Check back here in the fall of 2021 for information about the Third Annual Illinois Young Composer Contest.

This competition is open to high school composers of original music, in four categories:

  1. opera and musical theater
  2. vocal and choral concert music
  3. studio produced music, electronic and/or recorded.  Mp3 or mp4 files are accepted for all categories, but students are encouraged to submit musical scores for any combination(s) of the following instruments:
  4. instrumental concert music, with or without electronics

Opera and Musical Theatre: Scores should include between one and four voices. Additional instrumentation can include any combination of the following instruments: 2 violins, viola, cello, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, piano, double bass, percussion. DEADLINE: January 4, 2021 11:59pm central time.

Competitors can submit up to one entry to each category, but can only be selected as a winner in one category. Scores and recordings will be reviewed by the University of Illinois School of Music faculty members.

Prizes:

Up to three winners will be selected in each category with monetary prizes of $150, $100, and $50. Additionally, select winners will be invited to participate in a masterclass led by a composition faculty member, as well as a reading/recording session in February 2021. High School seniors who are selected as a category winner and who apply and are admitted to the School of Music (with a music degree as their primary degree) will qualify for consideration of a grand prize of an annual $10,000 scholarship.

 

Submission Information:

Submissions for the 2020-2021 competition are closed. Applications for next year are expected to open in the fall of 2021.
