What happened to Nathaniel Shilkret's Concerto for Trombone?
A newly published edition of Nathaniel Shilkret’s Concerto for Trombone is bringing fresh attention to a long-overlooked work with ties to the University of Illinois School of Music. Originally premiered in 1945 by Tommy Dorsey, the concerto has only recently become widely accessible, with its piano reduction now released by Cherry Classics.
The project reflects years of work by School of Music faculty member Jim Pugh, who collaborated with fellow Illinois faculty member Anthony Patterson on the edition. The publication is also reviewed by former Illinois trombone professor Douglas Yeo, making clear the depth of campus connections behind this milestone.
The review explores the concerto’s unique blend of classical and popular styles, its complex history and rediscovery, and its significance for today’s performers.
