About the Concert
The Martirano Memorial Award Concert features the winning compositions of the 2024 Salvatore Martirano Memorial Composition Contest. The first-place composition winner is Te’ena by Omer Barash (b. 1995, Israel, doctoral fellow in Composition at Columbia University in the fall of 2024); the second-place composition winner is stutter-step the concept by Chris Fisher-Lochhead (b. 1984, Vermont-based composer/performer; Senior Lecturer at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY); and the third-place composition winner is Echoes of Wild Petals by Daniel Fawcett (b. 1995, California-based composer, cellist, visual artist, and instrument builder).
The annual Martirano concert honors the legacy and music of longtime School of Music faculty member Salvatore (Sal) Martirano (1927-1995). In addition to Sal Martirano, other composers featured on the concert include J.J. Peña Aguayo and Odaline de la Martinez. The Illinois Modern Ensemble is conducted by Armando Bayolo and Stephen Taylor.
