Smith Competition Winners Announced

Thereza Lituma and Emma Olson are the 2019 winners of the Thomas J. Smith Scholarship in Music Competition.

Thereza Lituma is a senior studying vocal performance and music education. This February, she will make her main stage debut as the title role in LTI’s production of Benjamin Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia. She is from Chicago, IL and is a graduate of Whitney M. Young Magnet High School. Ms. Lituma is a student of Professor Sylvia Stone.

Emma Olson is a junior oboe performance major. Ms. Olson is a member of the Student Advisory Board, the Spengler Woodwind Quintet, and currently serves as President of the Illini Oboe Society. She hails from Sycamore, Illinois, and formerly studied with Kristine Mertens. Ms. Olson is a student of Prof. John Dee.

The award is named for Capt. Thomas J. Smith who funded the initial construction of Smith Memorial Hall in memory of his wife Tina Weedon Smith. Open to all female undergraduate students from Illinois who are majoring in music, the award grants each winner a full tuition scholarship for the remainder of their undergraduate education.

The panel of judges gave honorable mention to Mallory Klosterman, clarinet, and Stella Childs, violin.
