Moye Chen joins Universal Music-Decca Classics Label
Pianist and doctoral student Moye Chen has been signed to Universal on the Decca Classics label.
Highlights of Moye's past seasons include appearances in the Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, the Mariinsky Theater, the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, as well as the concerti performances with the renowned orchestras such as the Mariinsky Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and Beijing Symphony Orchestra. He recently performed Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No.2 and Mozart's Piano Concerto No.27 at the Mariinsky Theater with the Mariinsky Orchestra under Valery Gergiev and Lorenz Nasturica-Herschcowici. His performance of Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.3 with Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (conducted by William Eddins) was praised by The Cincinnati Enquirer as playing with “combined bravura and artistry”.
As for this signing, Cyrus Meher-Homji, General Manager of Classics and Jazz at Universal Music Australia, says: "I was mesmerised by Moye Chen’s performances of Rachmaninov’s Second Sonata, his enormous grasp of the architecture of the Liszt Sonata, as well as his ultra-sensitivity with pieces like Grainger’s Ramble on Rosenkavalier. He is not just another top-ranking pianist. He is a musician of deep sensitivity and soul, with technical facility to burn. He needs to be noticed and he deserves the greatest success."
George Ash, President of Universal Music Asia-Pacific, says: "We are delighted to work with Chinese pianist Moye Chen. Moye is a dynamic and evocative pianist both on and off the stage and we look forward to working with him to bring his unique artistry to the global stage. Moye joins an incredible roster at the famous Decca label and will add his own personality to this great heritage."
Moye has won numerous awards from globally prestigious competitions, such as the 11th Sydney International Piano Competition, the 58th Cincinnati World Piano Competition, and the 16th International Piano Competition "Spanish Composers". At Illinois, he has been awarded the Kate Neal Kinley Memorial Fellowship, and won the Krannert Debut Artist Competition in 2013. Moye is a Kawai Artist.
Piers Lane, world-renowned pianist and Artistic Director of the Sydney International Piano Competition, vividly recalls the moment he realized Moye's extraordinary talent: "When I first heard Moye's audition tape for the Sydney International Piano Competition, the hair on the back of my neck prickled as he launched into Rachmaninov Second Sonata ... I'm thrilled that he has been signed to Decca. His music making is excitingly distinctive and communicative, with an overarching feel for phrase and structure, inevitability, glorious tone - and his python hands seem to encompass whatever they are required to swallow!"
Moye's first album under universal will be released in 2018 and draw on two composer-pianists who were both American émigrés – Percy Grainger and Sergei Rachmaninov.
Moye is currently a DMA candidate in Piano Performance and Literature at the School of Music. He is a student of William Heiles.
