Illinois Flutists Shine at NFA Convention

The 2019 National Flute Association Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah soared skyward with University of Illinois flutists front and center and behind the scenes. Hosted and organized by Rebecca Johnson, Illinois 2010 alum and Eastern Illinois University flute professor, the annual event is the largest professional gathering for flutists in the world.

Illinois Professor of Flute Jonathan Keeble received a standing ovation for his performance of Richard Prior's Concerto for Flute and Orchestra at the Utah Symphony Orchestra's Abravanel Hall. The concert featured Professor Keeble along with principal flutists from the Metropolitan Opera, the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.

The Convention also featured 3 current Illinois flutists in the Association's top competition -- the Young Artist Competition. Of the 15 performers selected to compete live in Salt Lake City -  Jenny Shin (DMA) finished in the top 6, with Jean Lee (Artist Diploma) and Pei Cheng (DMA) participating in the competition's second round. In addition, for the third time in four years the Illinois Flute Studio had more competitors selected than any institution in the world. Jenny Shin is a flute professor at DePaul University.

Joo Chung, Artist Diploma 2019, won Third Place in the Orchestra Audition and Masterclass Competition. As one of three finalists selected, Joo was featured and received coaching from the Atlanta Symphony's Principal Flute, Christina Smith.

Elisa Moles, Illinois 2017 alum and flute professor at Fresno State University, was selected via competitive process to participate in a class entitled "The Art of Giving a Masterclass for the College Interview Process."

Chin Fei Chan, DMA 2007, performed in the Convention Performers Competition, and Audra Ziegel, MM 2008, participated in a program titled "Wonder Women: Celebrating Our Strength Through Music."

Bravo to all members of this outstanding studio for their individual and collective efforts!
