Barry Hearn Appointed Principal Trombone of Dallas Symphony

Barry Hearn (MM 97) has been appointed as Principal Trombonist of the Dallas Symphony, replacing the legendary John Kitzman, who held the position since 1972.  Prior to this new appointment, Barry served as a member of the trombone section of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington DC and as a member of the United States Army Band and United States Army Field Band. While at Illinois, he was a student of Professor Elliot Chasanov during which time he won the International Trombone Association Frank Smith Solo Competition, the Kingsville Young Arts Solo Competition and became the first trombonist ever to reach the finals of The Concert Artists Guild competition in New York. He won the 2003 International Women's Brass Conference Grand Prize. In addition, Hearn won the International Trombone Association's Robert Marsteller Solo Competition was a finalist at the Patrons of Wisdom Competition in Toronto,  St. Louis Orchestra Concerto and Sorantin Concerto Competitions. He has served on the faculties of the University of Maryland in College Park and Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.
