Vocalists Earn Prizes at Central Regional NATS Competition
Twenty singers from the School of Music competed and earned awards in the Central Region National Association of Teachers of Singing (CRNATS). In total, over 1,200 vocalists representing schools of music from Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri, competed online on October 31 and November 1.

Composition Student Awarded Second Prize in International Competition
Doctoral candidate in composition David Nguyen was awarded a second prize in the XIII International Competition of Electroacoustic Composition for his composition "Adumbrations."
Sponsored by Destellos Foundation of Mar del Plata, Argentina, the annual competition garners over 100 entries from across the globe, and is judged by an international panel.
Smith Competition Winners Announced
Thereza Lituma and Emma Olson are the 2019 winners of the Thomas J. Smith Scholarship in Music Competition.
Thereza Lituma is a senior studying vocal performance and music education. This February, she will make her main stage debut as the title role in LTI’s production of Benjamin Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia. She is from Chicago, IL and is a graduate of Whitney M. Young Magnet High School. Ms. Lituma is a student of Professor Sylvia Stone.
Lishan Xue Wins International Competition
Lishan Xue, DMA student in piano performance and literature, was awarded 1st Place in the Piano Division of the 2017 New York Artists International Competition.
Ms. Xue was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall with winners in other categories of the competition in a concert on July 6, 2017. She performed Bartok's Two Etudes, Op.18 No.1 and No.2.
UI to be represented in Shanghai International Organ Competition
Zhen Piao, an artist diploma organ student of Dana Robinson, has been selected as one of six finalists in the First Shanghai Conservatory of Music International Organ Competition. He will perform in Shanghai, China, for the two final rounds of the competition on September 14-15, 2017.
Zhen was among 24 applicants from 9 different countries. Zhen holds the MM in piano from the University of Illinois, where he studied with William Heiles.
UI Composer Wins Grand Prize in International Competition
Graduate student composer Dennis Reyes is the grand prize winner of the 2016 Sond’Ar-te Electric Ensemble Composition Competition. The competition drew submissions from composers from nineteen different countries, including Germany, United Kingdom, Italy, Belgium, Finland, Russia, and China.
Dennis’ winning composition, In the Heart of Cosmos, will be performed on September 17 at the prestigious Teatro de Vila do Conde in Portugal.
Dennis Reyes is a student of Prof. Scott A. Wyatt at the U of I Experimental Music Studios.
