Entrance Exam Schedule 

Monday, 17 August, 7-9 PM CDT: music history

Tuesday, 18 August, 7-10 PM CDT: music theory (includes score reading)

Wednesday, 19 August, 7-8 PM CDT: musicianship

Students are strongly encouraged to study and thoroughly prepare for the entrance exams. Failing one or more sections of the entrance exams may delay the sequencing of required academic coursework and thus slow down the progression to degree completion, in particular the DMA.  Registration is required.  Register here: https://forms.illinois.edu/sec/3236745


New Student Orientation

Orientation for new grad students will be online, Thursday, August 20, from 12:30-4 PM. We will send a Zoom link to students in the week before orientation.  


Final Transcripts

All new graduate students must submit original, final transcripts to Music Admissions as soon as possible. The final transcript must display the degree name and conferral date. Students who do not submit final transcripts from previously attended institutions will have a hold placed on their account and will be blocked from registering for the spring term.

Foreign Language Transcript Audits 

All new graduate students (except Music Education) will be evaluated by transcript review for Foreign Language entrance requirements.  Audits must be completed no later than July 20, 2020.

Master of Music 

Doctoral Students 

Music History, Music Theory, and Musicianship proficiency will be determined by exam. Music Education students do not complete Transcript Audits or Entrance Exams.


Students Holding an Assistantship 

The university’s Online Teaching Academy is an opportunity for faculty and teaching assistants to review good practices and discuss different pedagogical approaches as well as to receive hands-on training on technical tools for online teaching and learning. The July Academy will begin on July 13 and run through July 31. The August Academy will take place from August 3 through August 21.   • International Students: Please review important information for Pre-Arrival Planning and Check-In with the International Student and Scholars Services Office (ISSS). Until you complete the requirements for ISSS, your registration hold will not be lifted.
