The Journey to Gathering
In May 2017, the creative team including the directors and performers gathered to discuss the lyrics and composition as well as process and thought given to bring the work to life. With the composer's flowcharts pinned to the walls of a Music Building classroom, Powers described the energy within the words of the reference material and gave insight into the choices made with the lyrics, while DiOrio described the feel, emotion, and flow of the musical score. The lively discussion focused upon how the text and the music wove together to paint a portrait of Illinois’ long history and the vibrant future ahead. To quote a selection of text from Fazlur Khan, “The technical man must not be lost in his own technology. He must be able to appreciate life, and life is art, [and life is] drama, [and life is] music…”
As an integral part of Illinois traditions and culture, School of Music students and faculty were key participants in the University of Illinois Sesquicentennial Kickoff events on February 28, 2017 and continue to honor our history at events throughout the year. The upcoming performances of the Gathering at Chicago Symphony Center, Lincoln Center Alice Tully Hall, and Krannert Center for the Performing Arts are opportunities for our alumni and friends to celebrate and commemorate their Illinois experiences and to join our journey.
