The Piano Area consists of world-renowned performers, musicians and scholars who offer a curriculum that stresses comprehensive musicianship in collaboration with the whole Keyboard Area, and a wealth of performance opportunities in the beautiful and historic Smith Memorial Hall.
We continue to build on our rich traditions as a premiere school for piano study, and our graduates populate the faculties of the finest conservatories and universities in the world, including Cornell University, Oberlin College and Conservatory, Wuhan Conservatory, and Shanghai Conservatory. Numerous students and alumni have won, and continue to win, prizes in major competitions and performances in the US and abroad.
We believe that the Keyboard musician of the 21st century needs to possess a wide range of skills, repertoire and experiences to succeed in a changing world, and it is our aim to offer a multitude of experiences that are both rooted in the great traditions of the past and open to potential discoveries, versatility and creative experimentation. In this way, we encourage our students to develop their unique talents and attributes, and take the first steps toward finding and defining their way as the artists of the future.
Our facilities are among the best appointed in the country. Over twenty-five Steinway grand pianos for practice are complemented by outstanding performance venues. Music students benefit from access to the Music and Performing Arts Library, housed right in the Music Building. With regular guest master classes and almost unlimited performance opportunities, pianists are able to flourish at the University of Illinois.
