The instrumental performance programs at Illinois prepare students for professional careers in performance, studio teaching, and beyond.
The program offers comprehensive course work in solo and ensemble literature, emphasizing public performance in all orchestral and band instruments, piano, organ, and harpsichord. Students meet with internationally renowned faculty members once a week for a private lesson, and one to two times a week for studio class. The weekly studio class provides a forum for students of each instrument to perform solo repertoire, orchestral excerpts, and more. Performance majors have the opportunity to take part in a multitude of ensembles that perform in world-class facilities including the Krannert Center for Performing Arts and the Smith Recital Hall. Recent graduates have won prestigious competitions, orchestra/ensemble positions, and teaching positions around the world.
